‘Tis The Season To Give Back
Each year the end-of-year holiday season seems to begin a little earlier. Last year it was in full force mid-November and this year, holiday wreaths and ornaments were being put on shelves alongside the Halloween candy. And while a longer holiday season means more time to shop for gifts for friends and family, it also has allowed us more time to give back.
There are a million different ways that we can give back around the holidays – volunteering time at a local shelter, donating canned goods to the local food bank, dropping cash into the Salvation Army buckets on the street corners – and this year SHIFT Boston has partnered with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC) to fulfill the holiday wish lists of several of the MSPCC children, whose ages range from 2 months to 17 years. From puzzles to winter coats to learning tools to night lights, the SHIFTers in Boston are excited to be able to provide these kids with something that will bring them joy this holiday season. In addition to the items that the kids have specifically requested, SHIFTers can also peruse the MSPCC’s Amazon Registry and purchase gifts directly from there.
A little background on MSPCC*: The organization is a private, non-profit society dedicated to leadership in protecting and promoting the rights and well-being of children and families. Founded in 1878, MSPCC’s work focuses on preventing or mitigating the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, neglect, household substance abuse, household mental illness, and domestic violence. By promoting social and emotional learning and supports for children as well as tools to improve parents’ skills, MSPCC employs a two-generational approach to improve outcomes for both children and parents.
SHIFT Boston will also be sending a batch of homemade holiday cards to Cards for Hospitalized Kids, an internationally recognized charitable organization that spreads hope, joy and magic to hospitalized kids across America through uplifting, handmade cards.
And as we wrap up 2018, SHIFT looks to continue to give back in the new year. Our SHIFT Cares Committee will be hard at work in 2019 making sure that our organization is giving back in some way each month.
