After the Marathon Attacks: How You Can Help
We are saddened by the tragic events of April 15 in our agency hometown, Boston. While we are fortunate that none of our staff were injured during the attack, others were not so fortunate. If you want to help, here are some ways as suggested by local authorities.
1. If you’re local to the area, some hospitals such as Boston Children’s Hospital may need blood donations. Be sure to call first before visiting to assess needs. If you’re not local, consider giving blood in the community in which you live – there’s always a need or a need to be prepared.
2. If you were attending the event in person in the Back Bay area, the Boston Police Department and federal authorities would like any information you or others might have about the attack. Call 1-800-494-TIPS (8477) for community members who want to assist with the investigation. Or text the word TIP to CRIME (27463).
UPDATED: The FBI and Boston Police have asked that photos and videos be emailed to: Boston@ic.fbi.gov
There is a call for photos and videos if you were attending in the Back Bay area.
3. If you have children or know of children who are experiencing difficulty coping with the news of the attack, be sure to follow these basic suggestions from Children’s Hospital.
4. Check in on friends and family who are more vulnerable to depression who may have been affected more strongly than normal by the attacks, regardless of whether you’re local or not. Many organizations offer additional counseling services during times like this; help connect those who need it with these additional services.
5. In the coming days and weeks, expect opportunities for additional charitable giving to be available – and as is human nature, both good and bad, there will also be the usual appearance of scams. If you give, make sure you donate to reputable organizations by validating them with free services like GuideStar and Charity Navigator.
UPDATED: The Technology Underwriting Greater Good non-profit in the Boston area is raising funds to help victims of the bombing. If you can, please consider donating and spreading the word.
Our thoughts and prayers go to all who were affected by the attacks. We’re proud to be founded and headquartered in Boston, and we know our city will shine brighter than ever as the smoke clears.
