It’s Friday – you know what that means. Here’s your weekly rundown of the top tech stories our PR teams have been paying attention to:

Facebook rebrands

Facebook announced a rebrand this week as it continues to face calls for a government-led breakup (along with a string of nonstop controversies). The social media giant will have a new logo, and will be looking to distinguish FACEBOOK the company (which also includes Instagram and WhatsApp) from Facebook the app. Google did something similar a few years ago, but opted to call its new parent company Alphabet.

Capital One’s CISO moving on to new role

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Capital One was moving its chief information security officer, Michael Johnson, out of the role after this summer’s massive data breach. The Journal reports that at least a dozen experienced cybersecurity employees have left the bank since the breach was disclosed due to frustrations with the outgoing CISO.

PayPal becomes the most frequently spoofed brand for phishing emails

PayPal, the world’s most popular payment service, has unseated Microsoft to become the most popular brand for cybercriminals to impersonate in phishing attacks. More details on the report, which was released by SHIFT client Vade Secure, can be read here on Dark Reading.

People got some mysterious (and kind of creepy) text messages

A number of smartphone users in the U.S. received some odd texts early Thursday morning. The people who appear to have sent the messages either deny it altogether or say they were sent months ago (some of them appear to be from Valentine’s Day, making it even more awkward). The mobile carriers are also sending mixed messages – Sprint said it was caused by a maintenance issue, and T-Mobile says that it was the result of a “third-party vendor issue.” I think it was probably just ghosts.
