Rediscovering a Social Star
Everyone had heard of StumbleUpon – 10 years ago. Could we launch the StumbleUpon iPad app and significantly boost downloads, with the same heat+light as all the cool start-ups in Silicon Valley?
To accomplish our goals, we seeded a handful of top influencers with early app access and increased the total potential impact of our imminent launch by outreaching to multiple sectors of media, including consumer and tech influencers. As the launch drew closer we engaged tech press with pre-briefs and demos, and approached consumer media with scores of truly customized story angles.
No one got the same pitch.
Increased downloads at a rate of 50x. Day of launch: 35 unique articles and 5K downloads. Two weeks later, the hits kept coming: average of 8K downloads/day, with usage on the uptick. Two weeks later we hit 1M “stumbles” on the iPad platform, per day.
