SHIFT Archives: The Best of Q2 2015

As each year comes to a close, we like to sneak a peek into the SHIFT archives to see our content hits and misses. When devising a content strategy for a new year, it’s important to take note of what worked (and why) to plan what’s to come next year. Want to see how to do this for your blog? Here’s how.

Our top posts from the second quarter of 2015 focused on same-day content promotion, Game of Thrones, and expanding your skill set. Let’s take a look:

How To Use Google Analytics for Same-Day Content Promotion

One of the top questions in social media marketing (and content marketing in general) is how do you know what content is worth promoting? Will a blog post go viral? Is a tweet less or more likely to work? Predicting the future is difficult, expensive work. It’s certainly possible, using predictive analytics, to get a rough sense of what might work and what might not work, but few companies have access to that much technology and expertise.

Instead, most marketers look back at their analytics at the end of the week, month, or quarter. This makes taking advantage of trending content difficult. What if there was a way, if not to predict the future, to at least have an early warning system about what content you should promote? You can have that, and you only need Google Analytics and an alarm clock to do it.

2007 and 2015 GoT map

In early 2007, SHIFT CEO Todd Defren commissioned a map of the social media world to better visualize the industry landscape. This was a simpler time, when MySpace ruled the social media sphere and people still blogged heavily on services like LiveJournal.

Today, social media’s world is radically different, and thus it was time to revisit the social media world map. This time, we wanted to place it in a context that more people would know, and so we mapped out the social media landscape against the world of Westeros, the lands featured in George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones.

It’s hard to miss all the articles and blog posts about how the PR industry is changing, how it’s integrating with new skill sets. Data! Analytics! Graphic design! [Insert buzzword here]! It can get a little crowded and difficult to decipher what is buzz and what you should actually be focusing on learning. Let’s dive a little more into one SHIFTers personal experience on the subject – including why PR pros should honestly start thinking about expanding their skill sets (and where to start).
